From her earliest Super-8 films to her most recent “Vidoodles”, Midi Onodera’s work continually challenges societal, technological, and genre conventions. Her bold and iconoclastic take on issues like race and gender, as well as the inventiveness and sheer “watchability” of her films have earned her international critical acclaim.  Over three decades have passed since she began reshaping the landscape of contemporary moving images, and The Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival and the Art Gallery of Ontario are delighted to shine a spotlight on the groundbreaking work of Midi Onodera on July 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in Jackman Hall, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.

Thirty Years: The Moving Image Art of Midi Onodera” will be an exciting evening of screenings and discussion, celebrating the launch of a retrospective four-disc DVD collection of Midi Onodera’s films and videos.

The DVD set brings together important works created by Midi Onodera between 1981 and 2009. Included is “365” – a year-long series of mini videos shot and designed for presentation on mobile devices. Interviews and essays are also featured.  All DVDs will be on sale at the event and are also available exclusively through Art Metropole, Toronto,  www.artmetropole.com.

The evening’s line-up features respected scholars Monika Gagnon, Janine Marchessault, Kathleen Mullen, and Nadine Sivak, introducing their selections from the DVD set.  Midi Onodera will be present for a Q & A.

This event is co-presented by the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival.
