Asian Heritage Month

The Reel Asian Film Festival, Coach House Books and the Toronto Public Library will celebrate Asian Heritage Month with an event on May 6th featuring short films and live discussions with filmmakers featured in the new book, Reel Asian: Asian Canada On Screen.

On Tuesday, May 6, celebrate Asian Heritage Month with the Toronto Public Library. To mark the occasion, the library is featuring the recently published book, Reel Asian: Asian Canada On Screen. The first anthology of its kind, Reel Asian, co-published with the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, examines East and Southeast Asian Canadian contributions to independent film and video. From artist-run centres, theories of hyphenation, gay and lesbian cinema, new media technologies and sweet ‘n’ sour controversies, Reel Asian is a multi-faceted picture of independent Asian film in Canada.

The Toronto Public Library Event is hosted by the book’s editor Elaine Chang and will feature recent work from filmmakers Nicole Chung (Wilson Leaves Home), Khanhthuan Tran (Good Luck Counting Sheep) and Midi Onodera (Slightseer). Following each short film, Elaine Chang will interview the filmmakers.
